Belhacem (also Bethasem , Arabic قلعة أبي الحسن, DMG Qalʿat Abī l-Ḥasan ) is the ruin of a crusader castle in today's Lebanon .

location

The facility is located about 7 km east of Sidon , on a now forested mountain spur, on a loop of the Awali River.

history

The castle was built by the Crusaders of the Kingdom of Jerusalem in the early 12th century. The castle is first mentioned in the chronicles in 1128, when the Patriarch of Jerusalem , Garmond von Picquigny , besieged robbers residing in the castle. Strategically, it served the crusaders, together with the fortified caves of Tyron further east, to secure the hinterland of Sidon.
