Bellister Castle

Bellister Castle is a mansion at Haltwhistle in the English county of Northumberland . The crenellated house was added to the ruins of a residential tower from the 14th century in the 19th century . Listed as a Scheduled Monument and listed by English Heritage as a Grade I Historic Building, it is now owned by the National Trust .

The property stands on a mound that may have been the hill for an early moth . A traditional hall house with a moat existed on this site in the 13th century and a large residential tower was added to the west in the 14th century.

A report from 1541 mentions a residential tower that was inhabited by the Blenkinsop family (from the nearby Blenkinsopp Castle ) and was in "moderately good" state of preservation.

Around 1699 the property was enlarged by a three-story, crenellated house. The Blenkinsops had sold all of their lands, including Bellister Castle, in 1697 and the castle then passed through different hands.

A major renovation by the architect John Dobson in 1826 created an imposing, crenellated east facade. Further renovations took place in 1890 and 1905, after major fire damage in 1901. The oldest parts of the property were left to decay and are now just ruins .
