The Mergelkuhle in Belm is now a natural monument on the northeastern edge of Alt-Belm, Belm, Osnabrück district , in the area of ​​the former Astrup Castle . It is located on Schlossstrasse in an approximately 2 hectare forest area and takes up 80 to 90% of its area.

The area belongs to the Osnabrück hill country . The layers of rock that emerged in this pit are geological to the tertiary . There you can find marl rocks with remains of various calcareous and sandy rocks that can be assigned to the Oligocene . Marl is an important raw material for cement production and was previously also used to improve the soil of drained wetlands .
