Below the Root is a computer game of the US company Windham Classics from 1984. It belongs to the genre of point-and-click adventure , based on the novel Below the Root of the fantasy YA series The Green Sky Trilogy of Zilpha Keatley Snyder .

action

The action takes place in the fantasy world Greensky . The aim of the game is to save this world from evil forces who want to destroy it. The player selects one of five possible game pieces. The goal of the game is achieved without the use of force; the player must instead e.g. B. Solve multiple puzzles and interact peacefully with various non-player characters .

Gameplay

The point-and-click adventure with role-playing elements is controlled by a joystick. The character moves through the game world in various ways (e.g. hop, walk, run). English words and sentences (text commands) can be selected via a selection window, e.g. B. To take objects ("get") or to examine them ("examine"). The package insert contains a map of the game world.

Development and production details

The adventure has two-dimensional graphics, and music. It was implemented for the Commodore 64 , DOS and Apple II . The development was based on the first volume of the youth book trilogy The Green Sky by Zilpha Keatley Snyder ( Below the Root , Athenum 1975). The author was involved in the development of the game.

reception

In the 1980s, Below the Root was recognized in a review of a German computer game magazine for the appealing graphics, the atmospheric fantasy atmosphere and the non-violence. An American reviewer highlighted the quality of the color graphics and the use of selection windows instead of text input in traditional text adventures. Overall, it is an excellent book adaptation ("a superb adaptation of Zilpha Keatley Snyder's Green Sky Trilogy").
