Dudley Shelton Senanayake (born June 19, 1911 - April 13, 1973 in Colombo ) was a Sri Lankan politician .

biography

The eldest son of Don Stephen Senanayake studied after school at S. Thomas' College, Mount Lavinia science at Corpus Christi College of the University of Cambridge and then law . After graduation, he became a lawyer ( Barrister ) of the Law Society of the Middle Temple admitted.

After returning to Sri Lanka , he was elected to the State Council in 1936 and was a backbencher until 1946 . In 1946 he was elected to succeed his father Agriculture Minister (Minister of Agriculture) and Member of by that founded the United National Party (UNP).

After Sri Lanka's sovereignty on February 4, 1948, he was appointed Minister of Agriculture to the Cabinet by his father, who became Sri Lanka's first Prime Minister on the same day .

After the sudden death of his father on March 22, 1952 in a riding accident, he became Prime Minister himself for the first time on March 26, 1952 and held this office until his replacement by his cousin John Lionel Kotalawela on October 12, 1953.

After the parliamentary elections of March 1960 and the victory of his UNP over the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) by Prime Minister Vijayananda Dahanayake , he became Prime Minister again on March 21, 1960. However, he did not succeed in forming a stable government, so that three months later Sirimavo Bandaranaike became his successor as Prime Minister on June 21, 1960.

In the elections in March 1965, the UNP won another election. On March 27, 1965 he was then again Prime Minister and exercised this office until his replacement by Sirimavo Bandaranaike on May 29, 1970 after the previous parliamentary elections.

After a long and serious illness, he died almost three years later.
