Dissanayake Mudiyanselage "DM" Jayaratne ( Sinhala දිසානායක මුදියන්සේලාගේ ජයරත්න ; Tamil டிசைனாக முடியன்செலகே ஜெயரத்னே ; * June 4, 1931 - November 19, 2019 ) was a Sri Lankan politician and Prime Minister between 2010 and 2015 .

biography

After attending the School of Doluwa Maha Vidyalaya in Gampola in Kandy he studied mid- 1950 years of art at the University of Peradeniya . After teaching at the Doluwa Maha Vidyalaya , he was postmaster of Doluwa from 1960 to 1962 .

He began his political career when he was elected member of parliament in 1970 as a candidate for the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) and initially represented the Gampaha constituency until 1977 . In the 1989 elections he was re-elected as a member of parliament and now, after his re-election from 1994 to 2001, represented the constituency of Kandy and led the list of the SLFP in the Kandy district with 54,290 votes .

In August 1994 he was appointed to a government for the first time by Prime Minister Chandrika Kumaratunga as Minister for Land, Agriculture and Forestry and held this office until August 2000 under Kumaratunga's successor, Sirimavo Bandaranaike . In the subsequent cabinet of Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickremanayake he was Minister for Agriculture, Food and Cooperatives between August 2000 and December 2001. Jayaratne was also temporarily Secretary General of the United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA ), to which the SLFP also belongs.

Between 2001 and 2004 he was a member of parliament as a member of the SLFP's national list and, after its election victory in April 2004, he joined Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa's cabinet as Minister of Post and Telecommunications and Rural Development . He held this position in the second Wickremanayake government until 2007. Most recently he was Minister for Plantation Industry in the Wickremanayake cabinet between 2007 and April 2010.

On November 8, 2010, the UPFA won the parliamentary elections clearly with 60.3 percent of the vote and 144 of the 225 seats, while the United National Front won 29.3 percent and 60 seats, the Democratic National Alliance 5.5 percent and 7 seats and the Tamil National Alliance received 2.9 percent of the vote and 14 seats in parliament. The turnout was 61.3 percent.

Jayaratne was then appointed the new Prime Minister on April 21, 2010 and took his oath of office on the same day . On April 23, 2010 he presented his cabinet, in which Gamini Lakshman Peiris became foreign minister and John Seneviratne became interior minister. President Mahinda Rajapaksa retained the positions of Defense and Finance Minister.
