Belsay Castle

Belsay Castle is a 14th century medieval castle . It is located in Belsay in the English county of Northumberland . It is a Scheduled Monument and has been listed by English Heritage as a Grade I Historic Building.

The main building, a massive, rectangular, three-story Pele Tower with rounded tourelles and battlements, was built in 1370 and was the seat of the Middleton family . In 1614 Thomas Middleton had a new mansion added to the tower. A west wing was added in 1711 but was largely demolished by Sir Arthur Middleton in 1872 when the rest of the house underwent major changes.

In the early 19th century, the Middleton family gave up the castle as a family seat when Sir Charles Monck built Belsay Hall nearby. The castle is managed by English Heritage and is open to the public. Most of the interiors were cleared and the castle used as a folly , as was the fashion among the aristocracy at the time. It served as a backdrop for garden parties and other amusements.
