Benacantil
The Benacantil is a 167 meter high mountain in the city center of Alicante . It is one of the most popular sights in the city, not least because of the so-called "Cara del moro" ( German Moorish face ) on the silhouette of the mountain. The Castillo de Santa Bárbara and several small residential areas are located on the mountain . The mountain top offers an excellent view of the city and the Mediterranean Sea .
Flora and fauna
The following plants are found on the mountain:
- The Salsola oppositifolia was planted by the inhabitants and is a common plant near the coast. The Salsola oppositifolia is poisonous for goats.
- Other plants (which are now considered invasive plants) were imported from abroad such as B. the Agave americana and the Opuntia ficus-indica .
- Otherwise there are still endemic plants such as B. the Aloysia polystachya .
Furthermore, it is inhabited by different animal species :
- In addition to seagulls, you can also come across robins , giraffe and blackbird .
- Furthermore, a large number of hedgehogs were discovered in 2018 .

On the top of the mountain is the Castillo de Santa Bárbara, which once had a great strategic value for the city. Today the castle is one of the most popular attractions in Alicante and is a historical asset of Spain.
At the foot of the mountain is the Parque de la Ereta park , as well as the residential areas Santa Cruz , San Roque , San Antón y el Raval Roig .
The mountain is also connected to Avenida Jaime II, under which the Alicante metro is located.
