The Benedictine Pluscarden (English: Pluscarden Abbey ) is since 1948 a convent of Benedictine in Elgin ( Roman Catholic Diocese of Aberdeen ) in Scotland.

history

Val-des-Choues Monastery founded the Pluscarden priory in today's Scottish administrative district of Moray, southwest of Elgin , in 1230. In 1454 it was united with the Benedictine priory of Urquhart (belonging to Dunfermline Abbey). From 1561 it was officially headed by commendatary priorities , from 1595 it was in lay hands. When it was founded in 1943 by the owner, Lord Colum Crichton-Stuart (1886-1957), the Benedictine Abbey of Prinknash founded the Abbey of our Lady and St John the Baptist and St Andrew in 1948 , which became an independent abbey in 1966 and became an abbey in 1974 . The convent consists of 22 monks. Pluscarden is the only medieval monastery in Britain still inhabited and as such a tourist attraction.
