The Benedict Church (Polish Kościół św. Benedykta ) in Kraków is a small Catholic stone church on Lasota Hill in the Podgórze district not far from Krak Hill south of the Wawel Castle on the right bank of the Vistula . It is considered to be the smallest parish church in Krakow.
history
The church was possibly built around 1000 as a rotunda not far from the Krak hill, which the Wislanes used for pagan cults. The Benedictines from the Benedictine Abbey of Tyniec took over the administration of the church in the middle of the 11th century. In the late Middle Ages it was given a Gothic roof. Around the middle of the 19th century, the Habsburgs built Fort 31 Benedykt of the Kraków fortress near the church . Since the church is in the end line of the fort, it should first be demolished. Despite the Baroque interior, the church has retained its Romanesque-Gothic character. At Easter, the Rękawka festival takes place around the church . The church will only open on this occasion and on the feast day of St. Benedict (March 21).
