Benjamin Franklin Isherwood (born October 6, 1822 in New York City , † June 19, 1915 there ) was an American railroad and shipbuilding engineer .

Benjamin Isherwood was an engineering officer in the United States Navy. He initially served during the Mexican-American War as a mechanical engineer on early steam-powered warships of the US Navy. After the end of the war he turned to the development of steam engines. He rose to the position of Rear Admiral in this groundwork and served as Engineer-in-Chief of the Navy during the Civil War . He helped found the Navy's Bureau of Steam Engineering .
