Career

Benjamin Orr initially worked as a merchant in Georgetown . He also worked in the real estate industry. As a dealer, he was also a supplier to the United States Army . He later moved to Washington, where he was elected to the city council in 1812. His party affiliation is not recorded. In 1817 Orr was elected mayor of the federal capital by the city council. He held this office after a re-election between June 1817 and June 1819. It is worth noting that until 1871 the mayor of Washington did not administer the entire District of Columbia . The then independent city of Georgetown provided its own mayor until 1871. As mayor, Orr was primarily concerned with improving the infrastructure. In addition, the first volunteer fire department was founded at that time. In addition, a city prison and an official City Hall were built . The funds for this came from a lottery launched by Orr. He died on April 10, 1822 and was buried in the Washington Convention Cemetery.
