Benk Korthals (born October 5, 1944 in Voorschoten ) is a Dutch politician of the Volkspartij voor Vrijheid en Democratie .

Life

Benk Korthals, son of the later Vice Prime Minister and Minister Henk Korthals , studied law at the University of Leiden . From September 16, 1982 to August 3, 1998 he was a member of the Second Chamber of the States General . From August 1998 to July 22, 2002 he was Minister of Justice in the Kok II cabinet . For a short time he was again a member of parliament from May 23, 2002 to July 22, 2002 and then became Minister of Defense in the Balkenende I cabinet until his resignation on December 12, 2002. From May 22, 2011, Korthals succeeded Mark Verheijen as chairman of the People's Party Vrijheid en Democratie ; Henry Keizer succeeded him in this position on June 14, 2014 .

Korthals is married with three children and lives in Rotterdam.
