Benriach is a whiskey distillery near Elgin , Scotland , UK .

history

The distillery was built by John Duff in 1898, but apart from the malt house , which u. a. Longmorn supplied, closed again in 1900 and was not taken over by Glenlivet Distillers Ltd. until 1965 . reopened. In 1978 it went to Seagram and was expanded from two to four stills in 1985 . Between 1983 and 1996 u. a. unusually peaty whiskey produced, which was intended for blends , as the parent company at the time did not have an Islay distillery. Part of the production at that time is now available as a single malt . In 1999 the malt floors were closed after more than 100 years of continuous production. On December 19, 2001, the distillery went to Pernod Ricard , who first cut back production and only operated the distillery 3 months a year until they shut it down completely in August 2002. In April 2004, Billy Walker, Geoff Bell and Wayne Keiswetter bought the distillery, which has been operating normally again since then. To Benriach Distillery Co. Ltd. has also owned Glendronach since 2008 and Glenglassaugh since 2013 . In 2016 the Benriach Distillery Co. Ltd. taken over by the US company Brown-Forman for £ 285 million .

production

The water from the Speyside distillery comes from local sources. It has a mash tun ( mash do ) (6.1 t), eight fermentation tanks ( wash backs ) (together 240,000 l), two wash stills and two spirit stills which are heated with steam. Around 1998 the whiskey was distilled three times for a short time, which is rather rare for Scottish whiskey. The result can be seen since batch 11. In 2014 there was the first whiskey distilled under Billy Walker (The BenRiach 10th Anniversary) and in 2015 with the BenRiach 10 years old single malt the first standard bottling. Since 2015, the disused malt kilns have been put back into operation for a few days a year. Some innovations have also been made in the fillings and in the design of the bottles including tubes.
