Glenglassaugh is a whiskey distillery in Portsoy , Banffshire , Scotland .

history

The distillery was built in 1874 by James Moir, his two nephews Alexander and William Morrison and the coppersmith Thomas Wilson on the grounds of Craigmills Farm. Production began in 1875. After the death of Thomas Wilson in 1883 and James Moir in 1887, the distillery was equipped with new stills and fermentation vats by Alexander Morrison between 1888 and 1892. When William Morrison died in 1892, Alexander Morrison sold the distillery to Robertson & Baxter , who were the whiskey's biggest buyers anyway. These sold the distillery to Highland Distilleries Co Ltd. in the same year .

After sales fell sharply at the beginning of the twentieth century, the distillery was closed in 1908 and only reopened in 1931. The next closure followed as early as 1936, which was to last until 1960. From 1956 the distillery was completely renovated and refurbished. The new stills were now about twice the size of the old ones. This doubled the capacity of the distillery. From November 1986 the distillery was closed. The distillery was sold to The Scaent Group on March 3, 2008 for £ 5 million and reopened on November 24, 2008. The first bottlings after the reopening were announced at 22, 30 and 40 years of age. On March 22, 2013, the distillery was acquired by BenRiach Distillery Co. Ltd. Bought. In 2016 the Benriach Distillery Co. Ltd. taken over by the US company Brown-Forman for £ 285 million .

The water for the Speyside distillery comes from the Glassaugh spring. When the malt was still being made, peat from the nearby Crombie moss was used to make it. Later, the malt was, among others, from the malting of Tamdhu bought -Brennerei. The distillery has a mash tun ( mash do ) (5 t) and six fermentation tanks ( wash backs ) - Two stainless steel, which are not used more and four from Douglas fir. Distillation takes place in a wash still (12,729 l) and a spirit still (17,184 l), which are heated indirectly by steam.
