Tamdhu is a whiskey distillery in Knockando , Moray , Scotland and is located in the Speyside whiskey region . It is adjacent to the Knockando , Cardhu and Dailuaine distilleries. The name is derived from Gaelic and means small dark hill . The distillery's visitor center is classified in Category C on the Scottish Monument Lists.

history

The distillery was founded in 1897 and sold to Highland Distillers & Co just two years later . It was temporarily shut down from 1927 to 1947. The malt house was renewed in 1951 and in 1972 the number of stills was increased from two to four. A further expansion of the capacity to six stills took place three years later. After Highland Distillers was bought, the distillery belonged to the Edrington Group . It was shut down again in March 2010 and acquired in June 2011 by the independent bottler Ian MacLeod, who resumed production in 2012.

production

The water required is obtained from the Tamdhu spring. The firing takes place in three coarse stills ( wash stills ) and three spirit stills . The distillery is one of the few companies that still has its own malt house and the only Speyside distillery that covers all of its malting needs itself. It also supplies other Edrington Group distilleries.

Bottlings

The whiskey produced was mainly used to make blends such as The Famous Grouse , Cutty Sark and J&B . The first single malt bottling came on the market in 1976. There are also several fillings by independent bottlers. Currently (2019) two bottlings are regularly available from Tamdhu:

  • "12 years", stored in sherry casks
  • "Batch Strength", bottled at cask strength, stored in sherry casks without any age information
