Glendronach ([ ɡlɛnˈdrɒnək ] 'Valley of Dronac') is a whiskey distillery in Forgue near Huntly in Aberdeenshire , Scotland . Some of the distillery buildings are classified in category B in the Scottish list of monuments.
history
In 1826 the Glendronach distillery was founded by James Allardice (also spelled Allardes ). She quickly became popular with the London nobility through the intermediary of the Earl of Gordon. The owners of the distillery changed several times. From 1920 to 1960 it belonged to Charles Grant, one of William Grant's sons, the owner of the Glenfiddich distillery . Then Wm Teacher & Sons took over Glendronach. In 1996 the distillery was closed by its parent company Allied Domecq, reopened in 2002 and went to Pernod Ricard in 2005 . In 2008 the distillery was transferred to Benriach Distillery Co. Ltd. sold. Since then it has been under the direction of Billy Walker and his two South African partners. To Benriach Distillery Co. Ltd. belong to the Benriach Distillery and since 2013 Glenglassaugh Distillery. In 2016 the Benriach Distillery Co. Ltd. taken over by the US company Brown-Forman for £ 285 million .
production
The barley for the whiskey is sourced from surrounding farms using a traditional method of production . The water is taken from the nearby Dronac Burn . The fermentation process takes place inside a fermentation vat made of Douglas fir wood . Storage in sherry and American oak barrels results in a round taste of plum, orange aroma and a hint of vanilla.
Through the portfolio of Benriach Distillery Co. Ltd. of distilleries and the strategic direction, Glendronach can further expand its reputation as a "sherry monster". Whiskeys with smoky characteristics are mainly produced at Benriach and Glenglassaugh . Attempts with finishings (Virgin Oak, Sauternes , Port ) were temporarily unsuccessful, but are just coming back onto the market (2016). Glendronach has Hielan, Original 12, Revival (15 years), Allardice (18 years) and Parliament (21 years) as the standard range. There are also countless single cask fillings.
The approximately 4000 m² distillery can be visited.
