Benson Mhlongo (born November 9, 1980 in Alexandra , Johannesburg ) is a former South African football player .
Club career
Mhlongo learned to play football on the streets of his Alexandra township . After stints with the second division team Alexandra United and City Sharks , he joined the first division team Wits University in 2001 . Mhlongo stayed with the Wits until 2005, when the club was relegated from the Premier Soccer League , the greatest success during this time was reaching the finals in the ABSA Cup 2005, where they lost 1-0 to Supersport United .
Mhlongo joined the Mamelodi Sundowns after relegation and was on the defensive one of the key players of the Brazilians in the two championship titles of 2006 and 2007. In 2008 he left the club after his contract extension at the Sundowns dragged on for weeks, and moved to a free transfer the Orlando Pirates . While Mhlongo was mainly used in central defense at Mamelodi, he mostly played in defensive midfield, his preferred position for the Pirates. In 2011 and 2012 he won the championship with the Pirates, but was hardly ever used.
National team
Mhlongo made his debut for the South African national team in a friendly against Trinidad and Tobago in June 2003 . In 2004 and 2008 he was part of the squad for the African Cup of Nations , but was eliminated with his team in the preliminary round. In May 2009, Mhlongo was named to the provisional squad for the Confederations Cup in their own country.
