Bentend steading

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Bentend Steading is the stable of the farm of the same name around six kilometers north-northeast of the Scottish town of Kilsyth in the Council Area North Lanarkshire . In 1992 the Bentend Steading was added to the Scottish Monument Lists in Category B. It is of historical importance as it is a rare example of a highland farm from the 18th century, which is in both almost unchanged and acceptable condition.

description

The stables belong to an isolated homestead about a hundred meters south of the Carron not far from the Carron Bridge . Bentend Steading is an elongated, single-story building that was probably constructed in the early 18th century. An extension was made towards the end of the century or at the beginning of the 19th century. Stone material was used for the construction, which was smoothed by the water and grouted with mortar. As a result of erosion, parts of a wall collapsed today. The two window and three door openings are clad with sandstone , which was also used for the corner stones on the building edges. A door lintel shows the wedding date 1724 in addition to the initials "AA" and "MA" connected with a heart and could provide information about the year of construction. The gable roof used to be covered with slate shingles, some of which have now been replaced. On the Ordnance Survey map from 1865, the building is only partially covered.
