Bentley Layton

Bentley Layton (born August 12, 1941 ) is an American religious scholar .

Life

He earned an AB summa cum laude from Harvard in 1963 and a Ph.D. 1971 at Harvard with Helmut Koester with the dissertation: The Treatise on Resurrection (from the Coptic Gnostic Library): Edition, Translation, and Commentary . He completed a private degree (1970, 1972–1975) in Coptic Studies and Linguistics with Hans Jakob Polotsky in Jerusalem . Since 1983 he has taught as Professor of Religious Studies (Ancient Christianity) and Professor of Languages ​​and Civilizations of the Middle East (Coptic) at Yale University .
