Barbary

As Barbary or barbarism , the region of North Africa was between the 16th and 19th century Mediterranean and the Sahara and between the Atlantic Ocean and Egypt referred and thus corresponds to spatial disposition the term Maghreb . The states located there were called barbarian states .

In the course of the colonization of these areas by European powers (e.g. France ) (partly newly created or revived) designations of individual states to classify the barberies prevailed: Morocco , Algeria , Tunisia and Libya .

The name refers to the main part of the population in this region - the Berbers .
