Jakob Knappich (born May 21, 1866 in Lechbruck ; † April 2, 1944 there ) is one of the founders of KUKA (today: KUKA Systems , KUKA Roboter and KUKA AG ).

Life

Knappich attended the commercial college in Augsburg , from 1882 to 1885 he was an intern in Augsburg and Munich . Until 1889 he carried out commercial activities, including in Cologne . In 1891 he married Ernestine Götz in Frankfurt am Main . The marriage resulted in two sons, and Ernestine brought her daughter from his first marriage into the family.

In 1897, Knappich founded the “Calcium Carbide and Acetylene Gas Association” to promote the interests of the new electrochemical industry together with the Düsseldorf manufacturer and technical writer Franz Liebetanz. The following year it merged with the German Association for Acetylene and Carbide to form the "German Acetylene Association" as a professional association of manufacturers and consumers. Knappich was a member of the board of directors there for over 40 years. In 1927 he was given the honorary title of Kommerzienrat .

In 1898 Jakob Knappich founded the acetylene plant in Augsburg with his friend Johann Josef Keller . The first letters of the company name “Keller und Knappich Augsburg” eventually become KUKA.
