Berbice river |
The Berbice is a river in the east of the Republic of Guyana ( South America ) and namesake of the former Dutch colony Berbice , which existed from 1627 to 1814.
The 595 km long river has its source in the mountains of the Rupununi region and flows north through tropical rainforest to the coast. Here it flows into the Atlantic Ocean about 6 km north of New Amsterdam .
The main tributary of the Berbice is the Canje River in the north.
The tidal limit of the river is between 160 and 320 km from the sea.

Since December 23, 2008, a bridge has been connecting New Amsterdam and Rosignol on the west bank.
