Berdel

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Berdel ( Turkish for “girl swap”) describes a marriage rule in which two families get married cross- wise (double wedding). The custom is explained in the official dictionary of the Institute for the Turkish Language ( Türk Dil Kurumu ) as “simultaneous and reciprocal marriage of a son and daughter of one family to the son and daughter of another family” .

Berdel can be found in the Kurdish areas in the east and south-east of Turkey , where around 5% of marriages in 1926 were the result of this exchange of women . In the Diyarbakır region , the proportion of Berdel marriages in some villages is 16%. In the entire south-east, the proportion is now 4%. The fight against this custom is official government policy of Turkey.

The background to this double wedding is often economic problems. There is no need for a bride price (başlık) . At the same time, the bonds between two families are strengthened. Neither family loses any workforce, and wedding costs are saved at the same time. The tradition is favored by the patriarchal family structure and the feudal ownership and tribal structures . The custom is considered an indication of backwardness and a lack of education and is mentioned in connection with forced marriage .

Berdel is also the Turkish original title of the 1990 film The Second Wife of Atıf Yılmaz .
