Berengar Raymond II (Barcelona)

. Berengar Raimund II , including El fratricida ( "fratricide") (* 1053 / 54 , † 1097 ) until his death , Count of Barcelona .

He was the son of Raimund Berengar I. According to the will of his father, he ruled after his death in 1076, initially together with his twin brother Raimund Berengar II. ("Flat head"). However, since the brothers could not agree on communal rule, they eventually divided up their property.

With the assassination of Raimund Berengar II, he became the sole ruler of the county. Public opinion, however, accused Berengar Raymond II of striving for sole rule and therefore had his brother killed.

Around the year 1086 the attempt to conquer the Moorish principality of Valencia , which was under the patronage of El Cid , failed. In the war that followed, the Count of Barcelona was captured twice.

His life in the 1090s is unclear. It has been claimed that some Catalan nobles had him before King Alfonso VI. of Castile had accused of murdering his brother. The question of guilt was - as was usual at the time - cleared by a duel ( court battle ), which he lost. He then went to Jerusalem, either on a pilgrimage or on the First Crusade, and died there between 1097 and 1099.

He was succeeded by his nephew Raimund Berengar III. , the son of his twin brother.
