Beresinal song

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Beresina song , originally known by its opening words Our life is like the journey , is a popular folk song based on the poem Die Nachtreise by Ludwig Giseke . The well-known melody was composed in 1823 by the Erfurt organist and music director Johann Immanuel Müller (1774–1839). The beginning of the melody is strongly reminiscent of the aria «You have to believe, you have to hope» from the cantata Mein Gott, how long, oh long? (BWV 155) based on Johann Sebastian Bach ; a direct reference could not be historically proven. Two other melodies, including that of the namesake Thomas Legler and another by Friedrich Wilke (1769–1848), have been lost.

By Otto von Greyerz and Gonzague de Reynold , which with the Battle of Berezina brought of 1812 in conjunction, it became a symbol of the sacrifice of the Swiss military services ( mercenary ).
