Johann Immanuel Müller (composer)
Johann Immanuel Müller (born January 1, 1774 in Schloßvippach , Thuringia , † April 25, 1839 in Erfurt ) was a German organist , cantor , music director and composer .
Life
Müller received his first musical training as a child before moving to Erfurt in 1785 . Here he received organ lessons from Georg Heinrich Kluge . In 1788 he entered the Ratsgymnasium there and at the age of twenty became organist at the Reglerkirche . After a few years as cantor and organist in Kerspleben , he was appointed cantor at the Kaufmannskirche in 1810 , where he founded the town's first choral society in 1818 . In 1820 he was appointed music director of the Ratsgymnasium.
In 1839 Müller succumbed to a nervous attack. He left his wife, two sons and a daughter.
Works
Müller's best-known work was the " Beresinalied " to a poem by Carl Ludwig Giesecke ; it is especially popular in Switzerland as a patriotic song.
Among his other works are u. a. 3 symphonies, 4 overtures, numerous chamber music works, an oratorio and around 30 church music works (cantatas, hymns, motets).
