description

This intelligent, intrepid dog is of medium size and rustic in appearance. Characteristic is the lush and shaggy, matted hair in the rear area, which forms a natural protection. The color is gray in all shades, blue- merle , i.e. gray-black spotted, isabella, completely black is also possible, white markings are allowed. Bitches are up to 58 cm tall and weigh up to 32 kg, males up to 62 cm and up to 38 kg. All in all, the Bergamasco is a well-proportioned dog, well built; the height at the withers (shoulder height) corresponds to the length of the body, the dog appears square. The head is large, but must not appear clumsy, the ears are thin, drooping and should be about half the length of the head. The color of the eyes should match the coat, depending on the coat color, they can be more or less dark. A tail rolled over the back is undesirable; it should hang down to the hock at rest and swing up like a sickle when excited; it is covered with goat-like hair, shorter rods are preferred.

maintenance

Conventional grooming is unnecessary to get the typical look. In the second year of life, the upper and undercoat become matted, later they get the typical shaggy. The fur should not become matted in the head and neck area - the Italian term for these different areas of fur is "Doppio Pelo". The fur on the belly is conveniently kept very short, so that the shaggy are worn like a cape.

use

The Bergamasker is originally a versatile shepherd dog, which was used both for driving and leading and as a guard dog for mountain herds . Today he is becoming more and more popular as a family dog - he is also enthusiastic about dog dancing , mantrailing and agility . In addition to the original herding work in the Alps, Bergamaskers are also used, for example, as therapy dogs in old people's homes and day care centers.
