The mountain hut "Iwan Wasow" (Bulgar. Хижа "Иван Вазов"; abbreviated: х. Иван Вазов; transcription: Chizha Ivan Vazov) is a mountain hut in the northwest of the Rila Mountains , which is located in southwest Bulgaria . The mountain hut is located in the Rila National Park at 2300 meters above sea level, on the right bank of the Dupnischka Bistritsa River , in the Goljamo Pasardere area (Bulgarian Голямо Пазардере ). The mountain hut is located southeast of the mountain peaks Great Kalin (Bulgarian Голям Калин ) (2667 m; ) and Little Kalin (Bulgarian Малък Калин ) (2664 m; ) and southwest of the summit Otowiza (Bulgarian Отовица ) (2696 m, ).

The mountain hut was built in the summer of 1939, according to plans by the architect Gentscho Skordew (1900–1986) by the “Rilski esera” (“Rilaseen”) tourism group, a local branch of the Bulgarian Tourism Association (BTS). The construction took place on the 40th anniversary of the Bulgarian Tourism Association. The construction was completed within 27 days and cost 190,000 leva at the time .

Initially, the building was not known as a mountain hut (Bulgarian хижа / Chischa), but as a refuge (Bulgarian заслон / Saslon) "Ivan Wasow". It had an area of 64 m 2 and accommodation for 60 people.

The mountain hut is a massive two-story building with six small stone huts standing next to it. The official Bulgarian name for such huts is bungalow .

The mountain hut offers overnight accommodation for 98 people.

There is a canteen and a dining room for tourists. Some food and drinks are sold. The sanitary facilities are located in the building of the mountain hut. There is a water supply and electricity in the building, which is generated by a small water-powered generator.

For many years the mountain hut was owned by the Bulgarian Trade Union Federation, which had it rebuilt several times. For many years the hut was not occupied due to the difficult climatic conditions in the winter months and then served only as a refuge from November to June.

After changing hands in 1993, the mountain hut is privately owned and has been open all year round since then. It was the first privately operated mountain hut in Bulgaria.

The bed capacity of 73 places within the main building is divided into rooms with 3 to 18 beds. Next to the mountain hut there are 6 smaller huts and 3 larger huts ( bungalows ) with rooms for 2 or 4 beds.

The goods required for the operation of the mountain hut are brought up on pack horses, which are also offered to tourists for riding or for transporting their luggage.
