Pekka Uolevi Yli-Niemi (born July 8, 1937 in Turku , † November 8, 1963 in Mariehamn , Åland ) was a Finnish ski jumper .

Career

Yli-Niemi played his first and only international tournament with the Four Hills Tournament in 1962/63 . He achieved a good 25th place in the opening competition on the Schattenbergschanze in Oberstdorf . On the Bergiselschanze in Innsbruck he landed in the top 20 for the first time and was twelfth. A few days later on the Great Olympic Hill in Garmisch-Partenkirchen , Yliniemi achieved his best individual result in seventh place. In the fourth and final tournament jumping on the Paul-Ausserleitner-Schanze in Bischofshofen he landed on the 26th place. In the overall tour ranking, Yli-Niemi came in ninth with 746.8 points.

Yli-Niemi set the first hill record with 87 meters at the inauguration of the Ounasvaara ski jump in Rovaniemi as early as 1962 , which lasted until 1965.

On November 8, 1963, Yli-Niemi died in a plane crash in Mariehamn .
