The Sassjadko Mine ( Ukrainian Шахта ім. Засядька ) is a coal mine in the eastern Ukrainian city of Donetsk . The owner of the mine is the influential businessman and politician Yuchym Svyahilskyi . In addition to its great economic importance, the mine is ingloriously known for its repeated major mining accidents with high death rates. The worst accident, at the same time the worst in the history of Ukraine, occurred on November 18, 2007. In this accident 101 miners were killed in a firedamp explosion .
history
Production on Sassjadko began in 1958. The mine was named after Alexander Fyodorovich Sassjadko , a Soviet minister for the coal industry.
In 1992 it was privatized along with other industries. Juchym Swjahilskyj, then the manager of the mine and an influential local businessman, took control of the privatized company.
hazards
The Sassjadko mine is extremely explosive due to the large natural amount of mine gas and high amounts of coal dust , making it one of the most dangerous coal mines in the world. In addition, the mine is very deep with depths between 529 m and 1270 m.
Misfortunes
Serious accidents have occurred several times on Sassjadko. Since 1999 there have been over 200 deaths:
- May 24, 1999 - 50 dead, 40 injured.
- August 19, 2001 - 55 dead, 34 injured.
- July 31, 2002 - 20 dead, 2 injured.
- September 20, 2006 - 13 dead, 61 injured.
- November 18, 2007 - 101 dead, dozens injured. The worst accident in the history of the Ukrainian mining industry.
- December 1, 2007 - 52 injured.
- December 2, 2007 - 5 dead, 30 injured.
- March 4, 2015 - 33 dead.
