The Bering sea wolf ( Anarhichas orientalis ) is the Pacific (hence "eastern", orientalis ) counterpart to the Atlantic sea wolf (Katfisch, A. lupus ).

features

It reaches (proven) 112 cm in length, weighs 15 kg and is 17 years old (but is likely to get bigger and older). The almost cylindrical trunk is marbled in light to dark brown (sometimes almost banded). The small rounded caudal fin is almost touched by the dorsal and anal fin. Fins formula : D 83-86, A 54, C 19, P 22. There are four pairs of fangs in the upper jaw; the bit looks a little less bulky than the katfisch.

Way of life

Very little is known about biology. The food consists of snails (e.g. Buccinum ), mussels (e.g. Mya ), crabs, sea urchins (e.g. Strongylocentrotus ), starfish, and sometimes also fish. It spawns in October and November. No doubt he's guarding his lump of very large eggs. Only the local Eskimos (Alaska, Canada) operate subsistence fishing for it, so it should not be endangered yet.

distribution

Rocky shelf areas (10–100 m depth) in the North Pacific between Hokkaidō , the Aleutian Islands and Alaska , but only proven in places. Even less is known about its Arctic distribution - it is only detected here from Bathurst Inlet (Canada).
