The Berlinger & Co. AG is a Swiss company from Ganterschwil in Toggenburg specializing in temperature control (for example vaccines ) and tamper-proof closure systems. With 90 employees, the company generates annual sales of around 20 million Swiss francs .

history

The company was founded in 1865 as a mechanical cotton weaving mill. After a major fire, the factory was rebuilt for new products. With the bias tape, an innovation was achieved that enabled a much cheaper production than for comparable fabric tapes. This was followed by the introduction of a diversified product range for special requirements. In the 1980s, temperature indicators were introduced for packaging, which could be used to monitor compliance with the cold chain, for example for the transport of medicines in developing countries. About 10 years later, manipulation-resistant temperature measuring devices followed for the same purposes. In 2015, around 60 percent of total sales of around CHF 20 million were achieved with temperature control units.

Also in the 1980s, special adhesive strips were developed as a supplier product for sealing doping samples in textile tape production. This was followed by the development of a system lock that can only be opened by destroying the predetermined breaking point. Since 1998, the company has also been manufacturing safety vials for urine and blood samples, which were first used for doping controls at the 1998 World Cup . This system was adopted by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and the product, developed in 1997, was used exclusively for the first time at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney. Today it is used internationally for checks on athletes and at most major events, including 250,000 substance samples in 2014 alone. In that year, the production of the textile tapes was finally stopped.

The safety bottles will also be used at the 2016 Summer Olympics . When the vial is opened, the lid is automatically destroyed and tampering becomes obvious. According to its own information, the company has a global market share of around 80 percent in this area.
The security features are currently also being checked with regard to the incidents in the context of the great doping scandal in Russia.
