Bermuda I. (Asturias)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Bermudo I († around 797 in Oviedo ; also called Vermudo I) was King of Asturias from 788 to September 791 .

Bermudo was the son of Fruela Pérez, brother of King Alfonso I , and brother of the former King Aurelio (768-774). An electoral act is attested for his elevation to king. He had been ordained a deacon before his accession to the throne , so he was destined for an ecclesiastical career. Since he belonged to the clergy, his succession to the throne was canonically inadmissible. That is why ( according to the Chronicle of Alfonso III ) he voluntarily renounced his royal dignity after three years and lived for several years after his abdication . However, research has suggested that the abdication was not voluntary, but rather occurred because of a defeat by the Muslims in the Battle of Burbia . As early as 790 he had designated Alfonso II as his successor and apparently also made him co-regent . After his abdication the following year, Alfons became sole ruler.
