The 1992/93 NHL season was the 76th season in the National Hockey League . 24 teams played 84 games each. The Stanley Cup won the Montréal Canadiens after a 4-1 success in the final series against the Los Angeles Kings . The "Habs" decided ten of their 16 wins in overtime, which was a new NHL record.

Gary Bettman was named the first NHL commissioner, replacing last President Gilbert Stein as senior official. He drove the expansion and brought two new franchises into the league with the Ottawa Senators and the Tampa Bay Lightning .

The top draft pick in 1991 Eric Lindros , who was already traded as the successor to Wayne Gretzky and Mario Lemieux , refused to play for the Quebec Nordiques , who had selected him in the talent draw, and after a long tug-of-war he moved to the Philadelphia Flyers .

Each player wore a Stanley Cup centenary logo on their jerseys throughout the season. Rookie Teemu Selänne from the Winnipeg Jets pulverized the previous records for new professionals with 76 goals and 132 points. A total of 14 players reached the 50-goal mark and 21 players reached the 100-point mark this season.
