Bernard Pariset

Bernard Pariset ( February 12, 1929 - November 26, 2004 ) was a French judoka . He was third in the world championship in 1958 and three-time European champion. In total, he won nine European championship medals (3-5-1).

Athletic career

Bernard Pariset won the European title in 1951 in the category bearer of the first Dan with a victory over the German Walter Schombert . In 1952 he reached the final in the category bearer of the 2nd Dan, but lost to the Austrian Robert Jaquemond . In 1953 he won the silver medal in the all category behind the Dutchman Anton Geesink . In 1954 he won the European Championships in the 3rd Dan category, defeating his compatriot André Collonges in the final . In 1955 Pariset won his third European title, this time defeating the Dutchman Anton Geesink in the final of the all-category. In 1956 the first world championships in judo took place in Tokyo , Pariset took fifth place after losing to his compatriot Henri Courtine in the quarterfinals .

In 1957 and 1958 Pariset reached the final of the European Championships in the all category, but lost twice to Anton Geesink. In 1958, the two met in the final of the 4th Dan bearer category and the Dutchman also won here. At the World Championships in Tokyo in 1958, Pariset was defeated in the semifinals by the eventual world champion Kōji Sone , with his bronze medal in 1958 Pariset was the only non-Japanese medalist. At the European Championships in 1959, Pariset received another bronze medal in the all category.

Pariset won the French championship title in the open class in 1955, 1957 and 1960. He was awarded the 9th Dan in the 1990s. In addition to judo, Pariset was also active in Jiu Jitsu , and wrote textbooks on both sports.
