Henri Courtine (born May 11, 1930 ) is a French judoka . In 1956 he was third in the world championship and four-time European champion.

Athletic career

Henri Courtine studied judo with Mikinosuke Kawaishi and Shozo Awazu , who appointed him to the French national team. In 1952 he won the first European middleweight title and in 1954 he won the first of four French championship titles. In the same year he won the European championship silver in the all category behind the Dutchman Anton Geesink . Until 1962, European championships were held in the individual Dan grades. In 1955 Courtine won silver in the 3rd Dan behind Anton Geesink.

1956 Henri Courtine took part in the first Judo World Championships in Tokyo , there was only one competition in the all category. He defeated his compatriot Bernard Pariset in the quarterfinals and lost to the Japanese Shōkichi Natsui , the first world champion. Behind Natsui and the second-placed Yoshihiko Yoshimatsu , Geesink and Courtine each received a bronze medal as the best Europeans.

In 1957 Geesink and Courtine met in the European championship final of the 4th Dan, Geesink won. In 1958 Courtine won the European heavyweight title against his compatriot Robert Dazzi . At the 1958 World Championships, Courtine was defeated in the quarterfinals by the Japanese Akio Kaminaga and finished in fifth place. In 1959 Courtine won against his compatriot Claude Collart in the European Championship final of the 4th Dan. In 1962, Courtine won his fourth European title at the open middleweight championships when he defeated the German Gerd Stamer in the final .

Courtine stayed in judo even after his career. He was active in the French judo association for many years. From 1979 to 1987 he was the sports director of the International Judo Federation . Henri Courtine was awarded the 10th Dan in 2007 by the French Association. However, this degree is not recognized by the international Dan College Kodokan.
