It can be traced back to Treviglio near Milan from 1484 to 1507. Butinone was probably a student of Vincenzo Foppa as well as Bernardo Zenale , with whom he worked closely.

His main works include the Crucifixion Bardini in Rome and the Marian polyptych (Mary, Saint Martin and other saints) in San Martino in Treviglio with Bernardo Zenale. He also carried out the frescoes in the Grifi chapel in San Pietro in Gessate in Milan with Zenale (1491–1493). The Marien-Polyptychon is considered to be one of the main works of Lombard painting in the 15th century.

He was Bramantino's teacher .
