San Martino Basilica

The Basilica of San Martino is a church of Treviglio in the Bergamo province of Lombardy , Italy . The church of the Archdiocese of Milan is dedicated to Martin von Tours , who is depicted above the main entrance, and bears the title of a minor basilica and an Italian national monument. The church stands in the central square of the city in front of the town hall. It has been restored and modernized several times so that it is a fusion of different styles.

history

The origins of the church are believed to be in the 5th century and lay in the area of today's choir. The basilica was built in 1008 on the site of the Lombard Church of the Assumption of the Assumption on approximately the same area as it is today and has been changed several times over the centuries. The bell tower of the basilica was built around 1000 as a mayor's tower in Romanesque style and was not attached to the sacred building until 1482.

With the help of Stefano Maldotti's will from 1476, a college of clergymen at San Martino was financed, which lasted until 1798. In 1482 the church was expanded and redesigned according to the Lombard Gothic specifications , some of which can be seen in the Gothic chapel to the left of the entrance. In 1583 the church was raised to the status of a collegiate church by Archbishop Karl Borromäus , to which 17 parishes belonged. Through inheritances to the church property and with the growing number of brotherhoods, the fortunes of the San Martino factory grew .

In 1740, the facade around the Renaissance entrance portal was redesigned by the architect Giovanni Ruggeri in the late Baroque style with many statues. With the Cisalpine Republic in 1798 the prerogatives of the monastery were permanently lost. 1951 raised Pope Pius XII. her to the rank of a minor basilica.

Furnishing

Polyptych of San Martino

The three-aisled basilica houses one of the most important works of the Lombard Renaissance , the polyptych by Bernardo Zenale and Bernardino Butinone , which was created between 1485 and 1505. After about twenty years of work, it was completed on the main altar, where it remained until Pietro Pestagalli redesigned the altar in a classical style in 1830.

Large canvases depicting the Last Supper , the Fall of the Manna and the mystical wedding of St. Catherine were created by the painter Gian Paolo Cavagnaehre, and he also created the frescoes on the vault of the nave. The large canvases with the stories of St. Martin, which were placed under the nave vault after the renovation by the Galliari brothers in the 18th century, were made by Giovanni Stefano Danedi, known as Montalto. The paintings of the Assumption and the Annunciation (in the reliquary chapel) are by Camillo Procaccini . Saint Jerome in the walkway behind the altar is by Genovesino . Other paintings are by Nicola Moietta, Antonio Molinari and Giovanni Stefano Manetta.

The spectacular play of trompe l'oeil perspectives on the vault of the church is the work of the Galliari brothers, famous stage designers who also worked at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan. They also built the ambulatory . The frescoes on the vault with L'Assunta and San Martino are by Federico Ferrario.

The wooden crib carved by Giovanni Angelo Del Maino around 1515 and kept in the sacristy is noteworthy.
