Bernardo Zenale , also Bernardino Zenale, (* around 1460 in Treviglio , † 1526 in Milan ) was an Italian Renaissance painter.

life and work

Bernardo Zenale was probably a student of Vincenzo Foppa and worked closely with Bernardino Butinone , also from Treviglio .

His main works include the Marien-Polyptychon (Maria, Saint Martin and other saints) in San Martino in Treviglio with Bernardino Butinone, a major work of Lombard painting in the 15th century. It was commissioned in 1485. With Butinone he also painted the frescoes in the Grifi Chapel in San Pietro in Gessate in Milan (1491–1493). Around 1490 he painted a hall in the Castello Sforzesco for Duke Ludovico Sforza of Milan .

He later showed the influence of Leonardo da Vinci , for example in the altarpiece for the Brotherhood of the Immaculate Conception in Cantù , which is now partly in the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles and in museums in Milan. Another polyptych for Sant'Anna in Milan is now also distributed among several museums ( Contini-Bonacossi collection in Florence, Spencer Museum of Art in Lawrence (Kansas) ).

He also worked as an architect and in 1522 replaced Giovanni Antonio Amadeo in directing the work on the Milan Cathedral .
