For the 1974/75 season he was officially for nominated the 2nd team, but the 17-year-old only played three point games as a left winger, in the remaining time he was used in the junior league.

In 1975/76 the first team of FC Hansa had to play in the GDR league after relegation from the upper league. Here Köhler established himself as a regular player in the first team and, with 18 appearances in the 30 games played and four goals, played a key role in the immediate return to the league. In the new league season 1976/77 Koehler came only on the 9th match day in the league team to use. In his first first division game, Hansa Rostock - Union Berlin (1-0), he was substituted on in the 46th minute. He came to six league games this season, only three he played over the full distance. Hansa ended the season again as relegated. This time Köhler was involved in the immediate resurgence with 20 point games and two goals. For 1978/79 the club Koehler nominated for the league team, but this only had two short appearances on the 1st and 4th matchdays and otherwise played in the junior league.

At the end of the 1978/79 season, Köhler left Hansa Rostock at the age of 22. For the first team he had played 45 competitive games from 1975 to 1978 and scored six goals. In the league he played eight times and was without a goal. In the summer of 1979 Köhler joined the GDR league club TSG Bau Rostock , which at that time was considered a catchment area for failed Hansa players. With the exception of 18 months of military service, which he spent between 1982 and 1984 with the Vorwärts Stralsund army sports club, which also played in the GDR league, Köhler played with TSG in the GDR league until 1986. When TSG was relegated to the third-class Rostock regional league in 1986 , the then 29-year-old Köhler did not return to higher-class football.

Later Köhler became a vocational school teacher at the Rostock vocational school for structural engineering.
