Bernd Merkle

Bernd Merkle (* 1943 in Esslingen am Neckar ) is a Swabian dialect author. He writes books and poems and gives dialect readings.

Life

Merkle was born the son of a master gardener and the grandson of a wine grower. Having grown up in Göppingen , he began an apprenticeship as a machine fitter. Between 1965 and 1968 he studied at the University of Education in Schwäbisch Gmünd. From 1972 he worked as headmaster at the elementary and secondary school in Zell unter Aichelberg at the foot of the Swabian Alb. Today Bernd Merkle lives and works in Albershausen and has three children.

Literary work

In 1986 his first book So semmer hald was published by Knödler-Verlag . Three more books followed, then Merkle switched to Silberburg-Verlag , which has published five publications. Since the beginning his books have been illustrated by his wife Helga and his daughter Anja. TV appearances, readings and radio plays made him known.

Awards

In 2008 he received the Sebastian Blau Prize .
