The Technology and Computer Science Department of the Bern University of Applied Sciences (BFH-TI) with locations in Bern , Biel / Bienne and Burgdorf is one of the six departments of the Bern University of Applied Sciences (BFH) .
history
In 1873, the western Swiss technical center with the departments of architecture, electrical engineering, watchmaking school, arts and crafts school and mechanics and the teaching languages German and French were founded in Biel / Bienne . This technical center was financed exclusively by the city of Biel until 1892 and from then on by the canton of Bern and the city of Biel. It was not until 1910 that the canton of Bern took over the sponsorship.
In 1890 a corresponding law to set up a cantonal technical school was adopted by the Bernese electorate. When applying for the location in March 1891, Bern , Biel / Bienne and Burgdorf all competed . Burgdorf beat Bern and Biel in this election. The first course of study started in 1892 at the cantonal technical center in Burgdorf with 18 students in a construction, a mechanical-technical (including electrical engineering) and a chemical-technological department. A civil engineering department was added five years after it was founded.
Between 1987 and 1996, the then engineering school from Biel successfully took part in the World Solar Challenge . The vehicle called "Spirit of Biel / Bienne II" won the 1990 race, the successor models achieved second place in 1993 and 1996. When it first took part in 1987, third place looked out. Even in later years, teams used technology developed in Biel, according to the Dutch "Nuon Solar Team", which won the competition four times in a row between 2001 and 2007.
In 1997 the cantonal universities merged and became the Bern University of Applied Sciences. In the course of this merger, despite resistance, the degree programs were shifted to the individual newly created departments of the Bern University of Applied Sciences. For example, the University of Applied Sciences in Biel lost its architecture department to Burgdorf. Since 2005 the University of Applied Sciences for Technology and Computer Science has been training its students according to the Bologna reform.
