Bern church dispute

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Bern church dispute from 1949 to 1951 dealt with the attitude of the Swiss Protestant churches towards communism during the Cold War and with central questions of political ethics .

Prominent theologians , politicians, lawyers and philosophers took part in the debate. Karl Barth, for example, resisted any instrumentalization of the church in the ideological struggle against communism. The Church must stand up for peace and against the Cold War that was previously fought between the USA and the Soviet Union . This called Markus Feldmann , at that time - before his time in the Federal Council - Bernese church director and former companion Barth in the fight against National Socialism , on the scene, who represented the anti-communist counter-position.
