Since her mother, a dancer, died prematurely, Jutta Dirigero was brought up in a monastery. Now the young woman has matured into a beautiful adult and is desired by men. She falls in love with a painter named Melchior, for whom she is the model for an altar portrait. Jutta's patron is Canon Rochus. He is engaged in her engagement with the wealthy factory owner Adrian Hevelaar. Before this connection can come about, Jutta flees and returns to Melchior's arms. Both young people go to Italy, but one day Melchior abandons them. In the end, she, severely tested by strokes of fate, becomes the fiancée of a young man named Hendrijk, the nephew of her benefactor Rochus.

Prima Vera was created in the Union studio in Berlin-Tempelhof . The three-act act was 1,149 meters long and was censored in November 1917. The premiere took place on December 11, 1917.
