Michael Weinrich (theologian)

Michael Weinrich (born January 13, 1950 in Gadderbaum near Bielefeld ) is a German Reformed theologian.

Life

After studying Protestant theology at the Theological Seminary Bethel and the Universities of Mainz and Goettingen (also studied philosophy and pedagogy) and working as an assistant at the University of Comprehensive University of Paderborn was Weinrich 1978 in Goettingen the Dr. theol. PhD . As an academic advisor at the University of Siegen from 1979 to 1982, he qualified as a professor in systematic theology . In 1982 he became a professor at the University of Paderborn and in 1996 switched to the chair for systematic evangelical theology at the Free University of Berlin . In 2004 he worked with John Burgess as a visiting professor at Pittsburgh Theological Seminary (Pittsburgh, PA) for one semester. In 2004 he received an honorary doctorate from the Debrecen Theological University in Hungary. Since 2005 he has been Professor of Systematic Theology at the Ruhr University in Bochum and Director of the Ecumenical Institute of the Evangelical Theological Faculty. In spring 2009 he was visiting professor at the theological faculty of the Waldenese Church in Rome for one semester. As a representative of the World Community of Reformed Churches , he took part in the 13th Synod of Bishops of the Roman Catholic Church in Rome in October 2012 as a “Fraternal Delegate”. He retired in August 2015 and now continues to perform various functions on a voluntary basis.

Main research areas are: Reception of idealism in theology, personalism (especially Martin Buber), Johannes Calvin and Karl Barth, problems of theology adapting to the modern age, Judeo-Christian dialogue, religious discourse, theology of religions, Reformation ecclesiology and ecumenism. Together with Friedrich-Wilhelm Marquardt and Dieter Schellong he gave from 1983 to 1990, the book series interjections out with Jürgen Ebach , Magdalene L. Frettlöh and Hans-Martin Gutmann from 2001, the book series Jabboq . Since 2014 he has been in charge of the research series on Reformed Theology together with Marco Hofheinz and Georg Plasger .

Weinrich is u. a. Member of the working group Jews and Christians at the German Evangelical Church Congress , the moderator of the Reformed Federation , the German Ecumenical Study Committee (DÖSTA) of the Working Group of Christian Churches in Germany (ACK), the Meissen Commission of the Evangelical Church in Germany and the Church of England as well as the “Global Theological Network” of the World Fellowship of Reformed Churches (WGRK). He has been a member of the Council of the Community of Evangelical Churches in Europe (CPCE) since 2012 (from 2015 to 2018 one of the presidents in the three-person Presidium) and various ecumenical dialogues at European and world level.
