Dieter Schellong (born April 1, 1928 in Kiel ; † February 18, 2018 in Münster ) was a German Protestant Reformed theologian and university professor for systematic theology .

Career

Fritz Schellong's son studied Protestant theology with Karl Barth in Basel and was most recently one of the last surviving students of the dialectical theologian . He was accepted into the Vicariate of the Reformed Church and then ordained as a Reformed pastor . After presenting his dissertation a systematic theological theme he became a doctor of theology doctorate . When it was re-established in 1972, Schellong became Professor of Systematic Theology at the University of Paderborn . He was one of the co-founders of their Institute for Protestant Theology. In 1993 he retired.

Dieter Schellong came forward with questions about the practice of Christianity critical of the church and published on this alone and together with other studies, which often have church-historical starting points, but usually lead to questions of social ethics and social philosophy . He examined z. B. the internal connections between Calvinism and capitalism and asked the church institutions to what extent they are still guided by biblical questions or exhaust themselves in the cultivation of civil religion .

Before beginning his academic career, Schellong contacted the Christian Peace Conference and participated in the First All-Christian Peace Assembly , which took place in Prague in 1961 .

In 1998 he was one of the signatories of an appeal calling for the detention to be withdrawn . The organizer was the nationwide “Caravan for the Rights of Refugees and Migrants”, which carried out a demonstration at the Büren deportation prison .

Honor
