Mayor Bernhard Degener

Bernhard Degener (born November 16, 1829 in Arnsberg ; † June 5, 1903 in Bocholt ) was mayor of Bocholt for 36 years .

Degener entered the municipal administration early on and was initially city secretary in Lüdenscheid . In 1859, at the age of 29, he applied for Bocholt's mayor and was elected. He held this office for 36 years until 1896. During the time as mayor, the city of Bocholt changed under the conditions of the industrial revolution . The urban population tripled to over 17,000 during Degener's tenure. Seven years after leaving office, he died in Bocholt on June 5, 1903. Degenerstrasse in Bocholt is named after him.
