Bernhard Mitterbacher

Bernhard Mitterbacher (born August 17, 1767 in Karlsbad , Bohemia , † May 27, 1839 in Berlin ) was a Bohemian physician . He became known as the bath doctor of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe .

Mitterbacher was born in Karlsbad as the son of Dr. med. Franz Mitterbacher, district physician and his wife Catharina, b. Jungwirth from Prague, born. He studied at the Universitas Carolo-Ferdinandea in Prague the subject medicine and received his doctorate there in 1792. He worked from 1793 as a doctor in his home town of Carlsbad, where he was director of tourism hospital. In addition, as a senior physician, he was responsible for overseeing the Carlsbad sparkling salt production. When Goethe stayed in Karlsbad several times, Mitterbacher was his personal spa doctor.
