Bernhard (VIII.) Von Anhalt (born September 25, 1571 in Dessau , † November 24, 1596 in Tyrnau ) from the Askanians was a colonel of the Upper Saxon Empire .

Life

Bernhard was the eldest son of Prince Joachim Ernst von Anhalt (1536–1586) from his second marriage to Eleonore (1552–1618), daughter of Duke Christoph von Württemberg . Bernhard received extensive training, which was concluded with a cavalier trip to several German courts and Italy.

In 1591 Bernhard became governor of the Teutonic Order in the Ballei of Thuringia .

Bernhard initially accompanied his brother Christian on his campaigns for Henry IV of France and finally became the commanding cavalry colonel of the four-part 1,000-man contingent of the Upper Saxon Empire, which Emperor Rudolf II ordered for his campaign against the Turks in the Long Turkish War . Bernhard took part in the costly battle of Mezőkeresztes and died shortly afterwards on his return journey to Dessau. As a result, the district later no longer provided support with troops, but only with funds.

Bernhard's body was transferred to Dessau and buried there.
